About Simferopol

The capital of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea, its economic, scientific and cultural centre. The year 1784 is accepted as the date of its foundation, however this locality had been inhabited since times immemorial. Within the boundaries of the present-day city, in the Chokurcha Cave, there was a Moustierian site of primitive men who lived there 40,000-50,000 years ago. In the 3rd c. BC - 3rd c. AD Scythian Neapolis, the capital of the Late Scythian state, stood in the territory of the present-day city.

During the Crimean War Simferopol turned into a huge hospital whereto thousands of wounded and ailing defenders of Sevastopol' were transported and the outstanding surgeon N. I. Pirogov attended to their treatment and evacuation.

Names of many other famous persons are also associated with the city. Their memory is immortalised in the names of streets, parks, gardens, and on memorial plates.

Simferopol' is one of the tourist centres of the Crimea. Here work several large tourist offices and the majority of tourist itineraries through the peninsula start from the city. There are many monuments of history and culture.
