About Simferopol Simfreropol is the capital of Crimea. It is economic, scientific and cultural center of the penninsula. Founded in 1784, it survived through a rich history and through years it has become the main transportation and trade center of Crimea, too.
The area where Simferopol lies today, had been inhabited since ancient times. Within the boundaries of the present-day city, in the Chokurcha Cave, there was a site of primitive men who lived there 40 to 50 thousand years ago. In the 3rd c. BC - 3rd c. AD, the capital of the Scythian state - Scythian Neapolis - stood on the territory of the present-day city.
During the Crimean War, Simferopol was turned into a huge hospital whereto thousands of wounded and ailing defenders of Sevastopol' were transported and the outstanding surgeon N. I. Pirogov attended to their treatment and evacuation. Names of many other famous persons are also associated with the city. Their memory is immortalised in the names of streets, parks, gardens, and on memorial plates. Simferopol' is one of the tourist centres of the Crimea. Here work several large tourist offices and the majority of tourist itineraries through the peninsula start from the city. There are many monuments of history and culture. Back to Crimea pages
