Sudak is first mentioned in written sources in 212 under the name of Sugdeia. In the 8th c., it was already a wellknown trade centre. In the Middle Ages the famous Silk Route from Europe to Central Asia and farther went through it. Along with the Sudak Fortress of great interest is the archaeological complex of Sugdeia-Soldaia. The beauty of nature, the combination of sea and mountain air with the breath of southern verdure - this is the wonderful park of the Sudak tourist-recreation complex, a monument of landscape gardening. Rich flora of the park is enhanced with the marvellous landscape architecture. At present, Sudak attracts numerous vacationers and tourists, scholars and sportsmen and provides everything people need for interesting rest and recreation in contact with ancient history.

Sudats'ka Fortress Architectural-Historical Preserve (branch of the Saint Sophia of Kyiv National Preserve). The Sudak Fortress is an outstanding monument of medieval fortification architecture in Europe. It was built by the Genoese on a conical mountain, an ancient coral reef, in the 14th-15th c. From the east and south it is unassailable, and from the west it is difficult of access. The fortress has two lines of defence: the lower, consisting of the outer massive wall strengthened with fourteen towers, and the upper, which was a citadel of the fortress comprising the Consular Castle and towers connected with the wall. At the top of the mountain stands the legendary KyzKule (the Maidens' Tower) or the Watch-Tower.

After the Osmanli Turks seized the Crimean coast in 1475, the fortress began to ruin gradually. Later, by order of Prince Potemkin a considerable part of the structure was used in constructing Kyrylivs'ki barracks. In front of their ruins two ancient guns stand now.

At present, the Sudak Fortress Preserve is a branch of the National Saint Sophia of Kyiv Preserve and is listed in the State Register of National Cultural Heritage.

Novyi Svit. One of the most picturesque places in the Crimea, which is testified by its former name Paradise. Here is located the landscape reserve of the same name. Worth seeing is a building in the style of a medieval castle crowned with four towers. It was built by L. S. Golitsyn for employees of the winerY, and he with his family lived in the palace. One of the buildings housed Golitsyn's museum - a large and rare collection of art faience, porcelain, and glass from different countries. Nowadays, it is the museum of the history of the champagne winery.

Koktebel. The name of the settlement translated from the Turkic language means the land of blue peaks. In the 8th c. a large medieval settlement stood on Tepsen' Hill, which in the course of time turned into a commercial seaport. The beauty of the settlement was depicted in Cimmerian landscapes by M. A. Voloshin, K. F. Bogaevsky, I. K. Aivazovsky, and others.

Gradually, Koktebel turned into the colony of scholars, artists, and writers. Now it receives thousands of vacationers and tourists. The annual internatonal Crimean Jazz festivals are held in Koktebel.
