Chygyryn (Chigirin)
The town has been known since the early 16th century as a fortified Cossack settlement, later as a centre of Chyhyryn county administration. In 1592, the town was granted Magdeburg Rights.
From 1638 to 1647 B. Khmelnytsky was in charge of the town.
From 1648 to 1657 it was a residence of B. Khmelnytsky, hetman of Ukraine, and the capital of the hetman state (till 1676). When the town was destroyed in 1678 and the capital was moved to Baturyn, Chyhyryn lost its significance.
In 1797, it became the chief town of the Kyiv province.
Zamkova Hora commands the town centre where outstanding monuments of history, archeology, and monumental art are situated. They include a monument to B. Khmelnytsky (1973, height – 18.6 m), a stone cross placed in 1912 to commemorate heroes of the battle against Polish (1596-1597) and Turkish (1677-1678) armies, and a reconstructed bastion of P. Doroshenko which is a part of the Chyhyryn fortress of the 17th century.
The museum complex includes the Holy Shroud Church where the remnants of 263 Cossacks and Chyhyryn dwellers, found by archeologists on the site of a former cemetery, were re-buried.
The museum complex, which is Chyhyryn dominant, is situated at the foot of Zamkova Hora. It was built in 1995 according to the pictures and drafts of Prysutstvenni mista (county administration) of the early 19th century under the project of architect I. Kedryn. The museum complex consists of a two-stored building that is the B. Khmelnytsky Museum, and three one-stored buildings occupied by the reserve administration.
