Izyum Izyum is a relatively big city (about 55 thousand people) of Kharkiv oblast. It’s one of the oldest cities in the region. It was founded in the second half of the XVII century on the picturesque banks of the Siversky Donets River as a fortress. The oldest building of Izyum – Preobrazhenskaya Church, which is a unique pearl of the old church architecture of eastern Ukraine, was built in 1682-1684 and is the only building left from the initial ensemble of the Izyum fortress. In 1685 there was formed an Izyum regiment of Cossacks. It existed for several centuries and took part in Russian-Turkish wars and the Russian Patriotic War of 1812 with Napoleon. Voznesenskaya Church, built in 1819-1826, is another unique attraction of Izyum. Designed in the classical style, this white-blue church with dark domes immediately captures your attention dominating over the neighboring buildings.
