Castles of Western Ukraine

There are a lot of old castles and fortifications in Western Ukraine. Many of them witnessed ancient wars and battles with the Huns, Goths, Mongols, Turks, Poles, Hungarians, Austrians, Swedes, Russians, and Germans who was trying to establish their rule over those territories.

The most frequently visited and the most popular are the castles and fortresses in: Kamyanets-Podilsky, Khotyn, Lutsk, Mukacheve, Bilhorod-Dnistrovsky, Zolochiv, Olesko, Pidhirtsi, Svirzh, Zhovkva, Dubno, Medzhybizh, Terebovlya, Sataniv.

If you stay in Lviv, you may visit the Olesko Castle, Pidhirtsi Castle and Zolochiv Castle. It is not far from Lviv and will not take much of your time. With more time available, you can explore further and see also castles in Svirzh and Stare Selo.

Unfortunately, many castles in Ukraine are in poor condition and need a repair. The tourist infrastructure in these areas is not well developed, either. At the same time, such isolation from the modern civilization quite often makes you feel the scent of centuries and history better than anywhere else.
