Until 1944 the city had the name Ackerman. In ancient times, it was also known as a Greek settlement called Tira.
In the IX century the ancient tribes of ulich and tiverts found here the city of Belgorod as a local political and trade center. Since the XIII century it became a part of the Galitsko-Volinske Princedom. In 1484, the town was captured by Turks and its name was changed into Ackerman which during XVI-XVIII was the capital of the Belgorod Horde. In 1812 according to the Bucharest Peace Treaty the town became a part of Russia. During 1918-1940 years the town was under the power of Romania.

The Greek Church, XV-XVI
The St. John Suchavsky Underground Church, XIV-XIX. 116, Shabska Street. The church was built above the stone shaft, where in 1330 Tatars tormented to death a Moldavian merchant, who refused to adopt Islam.
Belgorod-Dnestrovska (Ackerman) fortress, XIII-XV. The main tourist attraction. This well preserved fortress was build on ruins of ancient town Tira by an architect Fedork. It had 35 towers, 20 of which have been remained till nowadays. The fortress is surrounded by a firth and a ditch of 23 meters deep. The Genues Castle (XII-XIII) with strong walls and towers also belongs to the fortress complex.
