About Zaporizhia ![]() The territory of the oblast came under the dominion of the Golden Horde after the fall of Kievan Rus'. The steppes along the banks the Dnieper River were subsequently ruled by the Crimean Khanate, beginning in 1445. The Zaporizhia Oblast was created as part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on January 10, 1939. Geography and Population The area of Zaporizhzhya region is 27 200 sq. km, i.e. 4.5 % of the Ukrainian territory. It stretches for 208 km . from the north to the south and 235 km . from the east to the west.
The climate is moderate-continental and is characterized by the clear defi ned droughty. The average annual temperatures are: summer + 22 C°, winter – 4.5 C°. The average number of sunny days is 225; the average annual precipitation level is 448 mm . Zaporizhzhya region is divided on three natural and agricultural areas: steppe area (50.8%), droughty steppe area (34.8%) and dry steppe area (14.4%).
Such climatic conditions are favourable for the development of agriculture, health resorts and tourism. The region is mostly plain. The soils are predominantly fertile “black earth” varieties. By the amount of the natural recourses Zaporizhzhya region takes one of the leading places in Ukraine . Rich sources of iron and manganese ores, granites are concentrated in the region. The share of the region in total Ukrainian stocks of mineral raw materials is: pegmatite – 88.06%, manganese ore – 69.1%, apatite – 63.42%, secondary kaolin – 22.9%, iron ore – 10%, fi reclay- 8.6%.
The territory of Zaporizhzhya region is divided on two water-supply sources: source of Dnipro River and source of the Azov Sea . The source of Dnipro River (the third biggest river in Europe ) possesses the north-western part of the region and consists of: Kakhovs'ke and Dniprovs'ke water sources, three middle-sized rivers (Molochna, Konka, Gaychur) and 118 small rivers with 28 water sources and 849 ponds on them. The source of the Azov Sea is situated at the southwestern part of Priazovs'ka height and eastern part of Prichernomors'ka lowland. Almost all the water sources of the Azov Sea are small rivers. The biggest among them are Molochna, Obitochna, Berda, Velykyj Utluk rivers. The northern part of the Azov Sea is abundant in fish and it is a recreational area of the region. The seashore is rich in mineral medicinal resources, such as: sea therapeutic mud (“Velyke” and “Kyrylivske” lakes), mineral waters (“Berdyansky” and “Kyrylivsky”). Dnipro River is the main source of regional industrial objects water supply, including such giants as Zaporizhzhya nuclear power station and Zaporizhzhya heat power station; drink water supply for the 50% of the regional population (90% in perspective); irrigation, etc. Moreover the Dnipro River is used as the energy source (Dniprovs'ka hydro electro power station), transport way and precious health resort and recreation resource. The population of the region is 1 861 600 inhabitants, i.e. 4.0 % of the total Ukrainian population. Urban population is presented by 1 418 500 inhabitants, rural – 442 100 inhabitants. The level of the regional urbanization is 76.8%, which is higher than the Ukrainian average level. More than 43% of the region population (797,300 inhabitants) live in Zaporizhzhya city. It is an important industrial centre and plays especially important role in social and economic development of both the region and the state. Ethnic structure of Zaporizhzhya population is: Ukrainians – 1,364,100 which make up 70.8 % of the total region population; Russians – 476,700 (27,7 %); Bulgarians – 27,700 (1,4 %); Belarussians – 12,700 (0,7 %) and others. Industry
Zaporizhzhya region is one of the largest technologically developed regions of Ukraine with signifi cant scientifi c technical and industrial potential. Region is a leading centre of domestic aircraft engine production, transformers and other high-tech productions, which are the Zaporizhzhya brand, world trade mark of a quality and reliability. More than 160 large industrial enterprises operate in the region. The metallurgical complex of the region is presented by world-famous enterprises of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, such as JSC “Zaporizhstal” – the leading manufacturer of steel and cast-iron, JSC “Dniprospetsstal” – the manufacturer of special steel, JSC “Ukrgraphite” – the leading manufacturer of graphitized electrodes, JSC “Zaporizhzhya aluminum plant” – the only Ukrainian manufacturer of aluminum, “Zaporizhzhya titanium and magnesium plant” – the only Ukrainian manufacturer of sponge titanium, the leading enterprise in manufacturing of germanium and crystalline silicon. Zaporizhzhya has world-famous machine-building enterprises with high-tech production, such as: JSC “Motor Sich” – the manufacturer of aircraft engines for planes and helicopters of leading companies (such as: CB Antonov, Yakovlev, Tupolev, Beriev, Kamov, Mil). Joint Stock Company “Zaporizhzhya automobile plant” is the leader of the Ukrainian car market. Autos produced by the Zaporizhzhya plant meet all world quality and safety standards. Closed joint stock company “IVECCO-Motor Sich”, being in co-ownership with Italian company “IVECCO”, produces not only autos, but also products for a installation into Ukrainian techniques as well as for exporting. Zaporizhzhya manufacturer produces 70-110 h.p. autos, transmissions and engines. In the future, depending on the market demand, the widening of the outputting model line is planed. It will be made generally by producing of the heavy tracks for international cargo transportation as well as by upgrading of the existing line of light tracks by the new model, which is already used in Europe . Autos produced by “IVECCO-Motor Sich” come into the market under trademark “IVECCO”. Aircraft industry develops very dynamically as well. Receiving of the certificate for AN-140 and its modifi cation AN-140-100 by JSC “Motor Sich” has made possible its operation on Ukrainian and international airlines. New products handling, such as a turbo-refrigeration aggregate ATX-55/50 and gasturbine power stations, is occurred.
The metallurgical plant “Zaporizhstal” is one of the most powerful metallurgical enterprises of ferrous metallurgy with a complete metallurgical complex in Europe . Main products of the plant are: foundry iron, hot- and cold-rolled sheet metal, cold roll-formed section and the new resource-saving technology of hot-rolled double weight metal rolls production was implemented. There is being mastering of high-quality automobile-body sheet. The plant exports its products to more than 50 countries all over the world. JSC “Zaporizhtransformator” is one of the biggest world manufactures of power and special transformers, electric reactors for the power stations, substations of industrial objects and other users. JSC “Ukrgraphite” – is a leading Ukrainian enterprise producing graphitized electrodes for electrosmelting, orethermical and other types of smelting furnaces, carbon masses for Soderberg's electrodes, felting materials on carbon base for the metallurgy, machine building, chemical and other industrial enterprises. Accordingly to the results of Ukrainian rating of 2000 enterprise's products were rewarded by the name “The highest sample”. JSC “Aluminum rod plant” – is the only Ukrainian manufacturer of aluminum products for electrotechnical purposes by the method of non-stop casting. The enterprise was one of the fi rst in Ukraine certifi cated by the ISO 9001:2000 quality standard. JSC “Zaporizhzhya abrasive plant” is the leader in abrasive tools production in Central Europe . “Know-how” of the enterprise is the technology of electroemery production from bauxite agglomerates. JSC “Azovcable” is the most powerful specialized enterprise in Ukraine , which produces more than four thousand of different type of cables. JSC “Azmol” – one of the most powerful Ukrainian enterprises of chemical industry. Products of JSC “Azmol” are always in demand not only within Ukraine and CIS-countries, but in far abroad states as well. CJSC “Zaporizhkran” is a leader of cranes and crane equipments production in Eastern Europe and in the countries of CIS. JSC “Refma” is the unique Ukraine 's enterprise producing refrigerating machines of various productivities. JSC “Brewery and non-alcoholic combinat “Salvutych” – is one of the leaders of East-European brewery and the most modern enterprise with high level of technical process automation. The quality of more than ten types of “Slavutych”-beer is confi rmed by many national and international rewards. CJSC “Pologivs'kiy oil extracting plant” is the largest enterprise of oil cultures processing in Ukraine and in the countries of CIS. Such companies as “Selena” and “Elegant” present clothing industry of region not only at the Ukrainian and CIS market, but they also fruitfully cooperate with West European countries. Zaporizhzhya manufacturer's clothes for the world class quality were rewarded by the Diploma “Golden Bayda” and a name “The highest sample”. Despite of the constant demand from the leading French, Britain , German, Austrian and Switzerland companies for the products of Zaporizhzhya manufacturers, joint stock companies “Selena” and “Elegant” are available for any type of cooperation with any interested enterprises. The power-generating complex of Zaporizhzhya is the most powerful in Ukraine . There was 29% of total Ukrainian power generated in Zaporizhzhya region in 2005 year. There is Zaporizhzya nuclear power plant – the biggest European NPP generating 6000 MW. Zaporizhzhya NPP today – is a modern highly technological enterprise well-known all over the world. The complex of measures that guarantees safety and pollution-free production of the electric power is applied here. Agriculture Area of regional lands dedicated for agriculture makes 2 248 500 hectares that is 5,4% of Ukrainian agricultural lands. Regional arable lands area equals 1 904 600 hectares . The implementation of agrarian reform became a basis for development of agriculture. There are 579 communities, 94 agricultural cooperative societies, 295 private (private-rental) enterprises, 2337 privatized farms operating in the region. The total product of agriculture in 2005 made $492,15 millions and increased compared with 2004 on 4,7%. Plant-growing prevails in the structure of agricultural production. Average share of plant-growing during 2005 year composed 68% while cattle-breeding made only 32%. There are favorable conditions in all agroclimatic areas for cultivation of vegetables, melons and gourds. The central place in the structure of plant-growing now and in a long-term perspective is taken by grain growing which is a basis for the development of other agricultural branches, and especially cattle-breeding. The main crop of Zaporizhzhya region is sunfl ower. Zaporizhzhya region is the third biggest Ukrainian manufacturer of sunflower. Total gathering of grain and leguminous cultures in 2005 made 1 806 400 tons at average productivity of 2350 kg/hectare. It was threshed 734 700 tons of sunflower seeds (158.5 % compared with 2004). In 2005 by all categories of facilities were produced: meat – 77 200 tones (103,1 % in comparing with 2004), milk – 383 800 tones (102,0 %), eggs – 556,7 million pieces (116,1%). Poultry keeping and swine-breeding are defi ed as the priorities in the development of cattle breeding for the next three years. The agricultural enterprises of all types of property increase their livestock of pigs and poultry. Taking the experience of partners from Denmark , Austria , Holland , the enterprises of the region implement step by step the newest technologies in cattle-breeding sector. There are 546 enterprises of food and processing industry operating in the region. 474 of them are the enterprises, which belong to the sphere of small-sized business and are focused on supplying of the local demand in food products (mini-bakeries, oil mills, dairies, grit cutters and other).
The enterprises which are Ukrainian leaders by the output volumes are located in Zaporizhzhya region. They are “Pology oil-extracting plant”, “Zaporizhzhya oil-fat mill”, “Zaporizhzhya meat processing factory”, “Melitopol meat processing”. Such enterprises as JSC “Zaporizhzhya brewery and non-alcoholic combinat “Slavutych” and “Zaporizhzhya factory of non-alcoholic drinks” are marvelous examples of profi table investment into the food industry ad regional agriculture. The share of regional food enterprises in total state volume of production composed 8,6% in 2005 year. The optimal network of market formations is created. 2 accredited commodity stock exchanges, 22 trading houses, 62 wholesale food and fruit-and-vegetable markets, 54 serving cooperative societies, 178 shops of firm trade, 8 credit societies successfully work on the territory of the region. Rural aria of Zaporizhzhya region has a well developed social infrastructure which is presented by more than 110 hospitals, 730 institutions of primary and middle education level as well as almost 900 libraries. Therefore, agricultural complex of the region can be estimated as extremely attractive for investing. The basis of investment attraction is fertile soils, inexpensive and qualified labour resources, significant production capacities of industrial enterprises, favorable geographical situation for exporting. Culture Zaporizhzhya region has numerous memorials – unique products of material and mental culture. Studying, protection and use of these memorials are important directions of cultural policy. There are 8031 objects of cultural property, from them 6276 monuments of archaeology 1677 of history and 78 of art in the region. 8 monuments of archaeology, 3 of history and 3 reserves (National reserve “Khortitsya”, historical and archaeological museum-reserve “Kamyana Mogyla”, historical and architectural museum-reserve “Sadyba Popova”) are included into the State Register of Cultural Ukrainian National Property. The laborious work for preservation and popularization of historical and cultural legacy is carried out by libraries and museums. Regional universal scientifi c library named after M. Gorky is the recognized among libraries. Founded in 1905, it became a signifi cant treasury of printed editions. Its library fund contains 1.5 million copies, 10 thousand of them are rare editions. Among state museums the leading place is taken by the Regional museum founded in 1921 by famous historian, archaeologist and ethnographer Yakov Novyc'kiy. Its funds have more than 100 thousand exhibits, many of them are unique.Each regional museum has the unique collection. Visiting the State historical and archaeological museum-reserve “Kamyana Mogyla” near Melitopol you can see invaluable on worldwide scale rock paintings – petroglyphs. The reserve territory is 15 hectares . There is a sandy hill (aria 3 hectares ) unique monument of ancient history and culture. Petroglyphical complexes – unique samples of primitive art by age near 14 million years have been found in grottoes and caves of this hill. National reserve “Khortitsya” which is situated on the island of Khortitsya (the largest island of the Dnipro river) and near-by islands and rocks. Total reserve area is 2359.34 hectares . The island is unique because of various natural complexes situated on its territory. It is a uniform historical, cultural and natural complex that covers the period from Mesozoic up to XX century. Museum of Cossacks history is situated on the island of Khortitsya . Museum “Sadyba Popova” near Vasylivka attracts connoisseurs of late classicism castle architecture. The museum, represented by palace-parks buildings, was well-known in Europe as General V. Popov's estate which has been built in 1884. The unite of an architectural genius and skill execution has created a real miracle of a citybuilding, as specialist say, doesn't have any analogies of high-quality brickworks neither in Ukraine, nor in CIS, nor in Europe at all. Annually state museums of the region have about half a million of visitors. The pride and beauty of Zaporizhzhya city is the Regional Ukrainian Musical and Dramatic Theatre, which continues developing cultural traditions of national scene coryphaeus. Nowadays classical plays are the most popular in theatre's repertoire. This theatre preserves its great status of the most powerful cradle of the Ukrainian culture. Zaporizhzhya Regional Philharmonic Society is one of the biggest concert organizations in Ukraine . Symphonic Orchestra directed by national artist of Ukraine М. Redya is well-known far away from Ukraine . High professional level of performance lets the orchestra to cooperate with world famous musicians. A lot of culture institutions of a club type actively operate in the region. During the last years due to reconstruction of club network the institutions of a new type have being created: district and city recreation centres, club-libraries, rural cinema clubs, houses of national creativity, culture and leisure. The deep knowledge of the Ukrainian traditions, originality, independence of art thinking marked works of the masters of decorative-applied art and amateur artists. There are more than 1500 such masters in the region, among them are sewers, carvers, carpet makers, and others. Transport The total length of roads are: railway – 1320 km ., automobile – 7000 km. (95,5% hard cover). 1093 km of roads are of state importance. Several roads of great signifi cance go through the territory of the region: Odessa-Melitopol-Novoazovs'k; The wide rail way network connects all industrial centers of the region with other Ukrainian cities, CIS countries and West European countries. The distance between Zaporizhzhya and Kyiv is: by railway – 715 km, by car – 618 km. The large part of cargo and passenger transportation is carried out by motor-vehicles and by railway transport. The number of agencies providing international truckage is constantly increasing. According to the results of the year 2005 – 21.6 million tons of goods have been transported by different means of transport: railway – 16.2 million tons (75.1%), motor-vehicles – 4.51 million tons (20.9%), water-carriage – 824 400 tons (3.9%) and by air – 21 600 tons (0.1%). A large navigable artery – the Dnipro river, which flows from the north to the south, plays an important role in Zaporizhzhya transportation system. It connects Zaporizhzhya not only with northern and southern regions of Ukraine and ports of the Black and Azov seas but also with 15 countries on basins of the Danube and Main rivers and also with Russia, Poland, and Belarus. The signify cant part of freight flow in the region passes through Zaporizhzhya River Cargo Port, which specializes in industrial, including metallurgical, cargos processing. Berdians'k seaport (on the Azov Sea ) is a marine gate to Zaporizhzhya region. Terminals and other port facilities allow to receive and store all kinds of cargoes (except bulk cargo) and to service all types of ships including river ships and ocean liners. Cargo can be delivered by the railway from the port to any region of Ukraine. An important role in the regional transport system belongs to Zaporizhzhya international airport, which holds one of the leading places in Ukraine by the passenger flow. Zaporizhzhya airport is one of the few profitable airports and constantly increases its service range. Berdians'k international airport is included in the structure of the state owned enterprise “The Airport of Zaporizhzhya”. Such companies as “Lufthansa”, “Austrian Airline Group” and “Eurowings” opened their offices in Zaporizhzhya region. All kinds of communication are developed in the region. Introduction of modern information technologies and the post office equipment makes it possible to provide email and hybrid mail services, account operations and information services. Zaporizhzhya region has a wide telephone network. Mobile and paging service companies are actively growing. Digital telephone stations have been implemented in the city of Zaporizhzhya. “On-line” Internet service is available in all spheres of activities. There are several powerful e-mail servers. By the amount of stationary telephones provided to the population Zaporizhzhya region holds one of the leading places among other regions of Ukraine.
